simExchange analyst Jesse Divnich crunched some numbers for the month of January and found some conflicting results according to the sales charts released by both the NPD Group and Mindshare. The two games that were the subject in focus for last month's software titles were Nintendo's Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the Xbox 360 (also available on the PC, and PS3). According to the sales numbers, both games had their own outstanding cut in the video game market last month compared to its rival software title.
The NPD Software sales for January showed that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare had an outstanding lead over Super Mario Galaxy, with CoD4 boasting 330,900 unit sales versus Super Mario Galaxy's 172,000 unit sales.
These results do not correlate with IGN GamerMetrics' data, which put Super Mario Galaxy on top in Mindshare. On the other hand, CoD4 was down by two-tenths of a percent compared to Super Mario Galaxy.
However, according to the simExchange prediction, Super Mario Galaxy fell short from its expected 391,000 unit sales. Divnich explained that the reason behind this was the slower hardware performance of the Wii which played a hindering role to the game's low sales.
